I recently was given the opportunity to review Max Lucado’s newest book For The Tough Times – Reaching Toward Heaven for Hope. Though small in size, this book packs a lot of wonderfully written words of hope and encouragement.
The introduction of Max’s book starts off with probably one question that every person has either asked, is asking right now, or one day in the future will ask. We find this question in Psalm 11:3-4
what can good people do?”
When jobs are lost, marriages fall apart, and loved ones dies, what are we to do?
David answers his own question with a declaration. “The Lord is in His holy temple; the Lord sits on His throne in heaven” Psalm 11:4
From that amazingly true and sharp words from scripture, Max Lucado works through biblical truths to encourage anyone who is looking or crying out in tough times. In 8 chapters, Max tackles questions as to
- Where is God?
- What is God’s Great Love?
- How do we keep our Eyes on the Father?
- Is Good Triumphant?
- What do we do about the Bitter Taste of Revenge?
- Does God speak in the Silence?
and much more.
Lucado has shown again his amazing gift to weave beautiful stories and words together to bring a biblical truth home. Reading through this book I felt more like I was sitting next to a dear friend that was there to encourage me. I wasn’t being told to just deal with it or pray and it will be better. No, after reading this book I was reminded of Truth that can get lost in times of trials.
God is always on His throne. God is for us (repeat that to yourself). God is always in charge. Satan has no power except that is given to him by God. Forgiveness is the only way. God defines God.
For The Tough Times is one book that I would recommend to have on hand at all times. It’s written in such a way that it can minister to just about anyone that is going through a trial. It’s not a deep spiritual book, but more of an encouragement and reminder of God’s love, peace, and understanding.
