I was given the chance to preview Andy Andrews new book
before it hit bookstores today.
If I had to give one word to describe this book it would be
It’s about a man – The Noticer – who has an amazing gift of looking at life in ways no one else can really see.
As I read this book I couldn’t help but think of how amazing it would be to have the perspective on life that this man – Jones – had. To be able to touch someone’s life with words in a way that would forever change them.
Andy Andrews does a beautiful job of pulling you into each individual persons story and trials. The chapters are rather short, but in that small period of time, you see how Jones encourages others to change their perspective on how they are looking at their life or situation.
In just about every chapter of this book I have pages dog eared. Here are some of my favorites:
when talking to some teenagers about dating and marriage Jones takes this perspective
For a moment the three friends sat in silence, digesting what they thought the old man had just told them. Then Ritchie spoke up. “Jones, are you saying, that now, while we are dating -while we are young-we should be thinking about who we want to spend the rest of our lives with?”
“I don’t know,” Jones answered. “What do you think? The alternative is that you spend your young years dating.. and NOT thinking about who are you to spend the rest of your life with. Does that seem wise to you?”
when speaking with an older women who feels her life is basically useless Jones encourages her..
“If you are breathing, you are still alive. If you are alive, then you are still here, physically, on this planet. If you are still here, then you have not completed what you were put on earth to do. If you have not completed what you were put on earth to do… that means your very purpose has not yet been fulfilled. If your purpose has not yet been fulfilled, then the most important part of your life has not yet been lived. And if the most important part of your life has not yet been lived.. ” Jones paused, waiting for Willow to follow his thought to conclusion.
” That is my proof of hope.” Willow said softly
“Yes, it is.” Jones agreed. ” If the most important part of your life is ahead of you, then, even during the worst times, one can be assured that there is more laughter ahead, more success to look forward to, more children to teach and help, more friends to touch and influence. There is proof of hope… for more.”
I truly loved and enjoyed reading this book. So, if your looking for a beautifully written, inspiring book to read this summer, I would suggest adding this to your book list.
Here’s more information on
A new story of common wisdom from the bestselling author of The Traveler’s Gift
Orange Beach, Alabama is a simple town filled with simple people. But like all humans on the planet, the good folks of Orange Beach have their share of problems – marriages teetering on the brink of divorce, young adults giving up on life, business people on the verge of bankruptcy, as well as the many other obstacles that life seems to dish out to the masses.
Fortunately, when things look the darkest – a mysterious man named Jones has a miraculous way of showing up. An elderly man with white hair, of indiscriminate age and race, wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt and leather flip flops carrying a battered old suitcase, Jones is a unique soul. Communicating what he calls “a little perspective,” Jones explains that he has been given a gift of noticing things that others miss. “Your time on this earth is a gift to be used wisely,” he says. “Don’t squander your words or your thoughts. Consider even the simplest action you take, for your lives matter beyond
measure…and they matter forever.”
Jones speaks to that part in everyone that is yearning to understand why things happen and what we can do about it.
Like The Traveler’s Gift, The Noticer is a unique narrative is a blend of fiction, allegory, and inspiration. Gifted storyteller Andy Andrews helps us see how becoming a “noticer” just might change a person’s life forever.
