Back in December I attended a business meeting with my husband.
There his area manager was challenging the men to whether they would be setting Goals for 2011 or would they have a Purpose for 2011.
He touched on the difference between the two only a small bit, but it was one of those things that got stuck in my head and I’ve been thinking about it every since.
With 2011 just a few days old, I’m praying about what my PURPOSE will be this year, not my Goals.
You see, once I looked up the definition for the two words, I immediately knew I wanted to have PURPOSE (and/or Purposes) instead of Goals.
A Purpose can be a noun, but it also can be a verb – an ACTION word.
–verb (used with object)
- to set as an aim, intention, or goal for oneself.
- to intend; design.
- to resolve (to do something)
The word Goal (as far as I can tell) has no verb form.
- the result or achievement toward which effort is directed; aim; end.
- the terminal point in a race.
- a pole, line, or other marker by which such a point is indicated.
It’s a place you get to, not something you DO.
I want to DO this year.
I don’t want to set ‘purposes’ in the hope to reach a ‘goal’, I just want to DO Purpose– if that makes sense.
I want to set an aim for the things I do, have intention behind it and let the goal be a part of it all.
I want to design new things for my family and my spiritual walk and I want to resolve/DO new things this year that make a difference.
I’m still praying over what exactly those things are.
What is my purpose..
- for my Savior
- for my home
- for my marriage
- as a Mother
- as a friend
- as a blogger
- and so much more…
I’m looking forward to sooo much this year and praying 2011 will bring about many blessings for all of us.
