I was watching an old episode of the Food Networks Cupcake Wars awhile back and I saw where Chloe Coscarelli BLEW AWAY the competition with her VEGAN.. yes I said VEGAN, Ginger Nutmeg Spice Cupcakes.
It didn’t take me by total surprise since I’ve been learning more and more about the vegan lifestyle and cooking ways, but to see someone win a Cupcake contest with something that is usually packed with all kinds of dairy and such.. that was pretty awesome.
So needless to say, I jumped at the chance to review Chloe’s Kitchen!
Packed with over 100 recipes for making food the Vegan way, this cookbook is a must have for those just starting a vegan lifestyle, veteran vegans, and even those non vegans who just want to try a few recipes to see what it’s all about.
I really enjoyed sitting and reading through this cookbook. Chloe’s Introduction to the book shares a little bit about why she became vegan and what the vegan lifestyle is all about.
The Forward of the book is written by Dr. Neal D. Barnard, M.D., who explains how a vegan diet can help with loosing weight, reducing cholesterol, fighting diseases, and boost energy.
There’s also a great section titled Vegan Pantry that shows you how to gather all the right ingredients to stock your new kitchen for this new adventure. Lists of Fats and Oils, Flavorings, Non Dairy items, and so on. All with great descriptions so you know what to look for in the store.
And than, of course, are the recipes!!
With Chapters like..
- Small Bites – appetizers and finger foods
- Soups and Salads
- Simply Vegetables
- Eat with Your Hands
- The Main Event
- Cupcakes and More
you are covered from the beginning to the end of any meal.
My copy of Chloe’s Kitchen has sticky notes ALL over it. (That of course is how I mark which recipe I want to try).
So the other day, I sat down and planned out a week of meals, incorporating some of Chloe’s recipes into our week.
Last night we had the Double Double Drive-Thru Burgers.
To be honest, I was SOOOO leery about this recipe.
Walnuts and rice??? ( I went with the rice instead of the tempeh).
But you know what??… They were AHHHMAZING!!
Even the Hubster and both daughters chowed down on these things. We all LOVED THEM.
I added a few more spices – just ones I usually put in our regular burgers – and even though they DID have a different texture and taste to them, the whole family gave them a big THUMBS UP. Which means I can make them again!
If you’re thinking about trying out some Vegan recipes or are looking for some new recipes, I HIGHLY suggest getting yourself a copy of Chloe’s Kitchen.
And if you haven’t seen the episode of Cupcake Wars with Chloe in it… here’s a great edited version.
