First off, let me say that I am in no means an expert on eggs. These are just my thoughts and opinions.
My family and I are not big egg eaters. We like to have egg sandwiches on Sunday morning before church and maybe a hard boiled egg on a salad now and than, so even though we don’t eat them every day, I do want to make sure what we are eating is healthy.
And that’s where the question comes in, Farm Eggs or Store Bought ~ Which One Is Better?
I will share with you why I choose to buy my eggs from friends or local farmers and than you can decide for yourself.
The Life of A Chicken
Farm Raised Chickens – Most farm chickens have a pretty good life. They wake up in the morning and get to stretch their little legs out under the sun. They may have a special yard just for them or get to roam the family farm, eating bugs, scratching at the dirt, and all in all have a good ole time.
They have food and water available to them at all times and sometimes even get treats like fruit and vegetable table scrapings. These scrapings, grass, insects, and such that they get to scratch up, help produce nutrient rich eggs.
Their days are spent laying eggs, roaming the yard, and generally just living a very relaxed, stress free life.
Factory Farm Chickens – These poor things don’t have it as good.
Factory Farm layers are usually kept in steel cages with more than one chicken. They never really truly see the light of day nor have room to really walk around or stretch their wings.
Yes they are fed, watered, and at some point have their cages cleaned, but beyond that… their lives are not all that great.
There are plenty of videos and reports out there that talk more about factory farms. I could continue to give you more details, but all you have to do is Google Factory Farm Eggs and you’ll find more than enough information.
Farm Eggs – Farm chickens enjoy foraging and eating grass, plants, worms, and insects all of which help increase the nutrient value of the egg.
Farm eggs have been found to have 1⁄3 less cholesterol, 1⁄4 less saturated fat, 2⁄3 more vitamin A, 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids, 3 times more vitamin E, 7 times more beta carotene, 4 to 6 times as much vitamin D,rich in Omega 3 fats, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, Vitamin B-12 and other wonderful nutrients. (Information from Mother Earth News)
They are also known to have a much lower chance of any contamination, which allows them NOT to have to be fed foods with antibiotics in them.
Store Bought Eggs- well, basically you can take the information found above for the farm eggs and just flip it. Higher in cholesterol, fats, and lower in vitamins.
Why I choose Farm Eggs over Store Bought
Beyond all the information given above, the reason I prefer to buy farm fresh eggs over store bought is pretty simple.. I want to give myself and my family the healthiest choices when it comes to food. No strange chemicals, no animals and or their by products, being fed unnatural feed with antibiotics in it, and definitely no genetically modified anything.
I also love the fact that I can head over to my friends house and see where my eggs are coming from (and even take pictures like the ones in this post). I get to see the love she has for her animals and know that she’s raising clean, healthy chickens.
Yes, it costs more to buy farm fresh eggs, but for me… it’s worth it.
