I often get asked why I bother buying organic.
It’s more expensive, sometimes hard to find, and isn’t it just the same ole veggies as the other ones?
No, they are not the same..
Yes, it takes a little more work to find them.. sometimes..
and Yes, they tend to be more expensive…
But for me, all the above is worth it, so I’m going to give you my Top 5 Reasons Why I Buy Organic.
Top 5 Reasons Why I Buy Organic
1.Avoiding GMO’s – I’m going to write a separate post of why I don’t like GMO’s, but for now, it’s one of the MAIN reasons why I buy organic products (here’s a great article by Creative Green Living for more info)
GMO’s (genetically modified organism) are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals.
Now, let me say, I am not against science. Science has allowed for many wonderful discoveries, but when it comes to my food.. leave it alone. In my humble opinion… I think God did a pretty darn good job creating everything thing we need when it comes to veggies, so there’s no need to modify anything..
AND… if your ‘modifying’ the food I eat.. what is that doing to me on the inside?
I could go on and on and on about GMO’s, but for now, let’s just say I like my veggies they way God created them.
2. Avoiding antibiotics, hormones, and drugs in my food – The animals that are produced for our consumption and or that make food for us, are raised in such HUGE numbers these days to keep up with the demand for meat and chicken products. Millions of pounds of antibiotics and hormones are pumped into these animals to keep them ‘healthy’ , but these antibiotics and hormones are than passed on through the meat and or product they produce to the consumer.
I am mostly a plant based eater. I love my organic veggies, but when I do buy meat or eggs for my family, I will only buy organic and or local so that I know how the animals were raised and what they weren’t treated with.
3. Support Local Organic Farmers – I am a people person. I LOVE to meet new people. I love to hear about what brings them joy and to see them doing what they love. Being able to find local, organic farmers and support them in what they are doing has been so much fun.
Not only do I reap the wonderful benefits of their hard work, but I also love to spread the word about their wonderful gardens and support my local community.
4. It tastes better – Now this one is ALL my opinion. I know there have been studies out there that can back me up, but truly it’s all a matter of ones taste buds.
I don’t know if it’s a mind thing, that I just ‘think’ they taste better, but I’m telling you… roasting organic beets that were picked from a local farmer, to me, taste SO Much better than any beet I’ve bought and roasted from the store. Lettuce, carrots, celery, and so many other veggies… to me.. seem to taste so much better when they are organic.
5. It’s healthier for my family and myself – I know.. I know..there are two sides to every argument. You can find plenty of articles that will tell you organic is better and or that non organic is OK, but it comes down to what I think is best for my family.
When I sit down and think about the basic options – buying food that was either created in a lab and or sprayed with a ton of chemicals vs buying food that is pretty much as close as it gets to the way my Creator made it.. I’ll pick organic every time.
I’d rather pay a little more now (though I don’t really pay much more – that’s ANOTHER blog post), than pay A LOT more later with my health.
Now, a lot of these reason are just that – my reasons and my opinion.
Some are backed up by research, yes, but in the end, what you feed or do not feed your family is totally up to you. These are just my thoughts that I wanted to share.
If you are new to this whole ‘organic‘ thing, leave me a comment and let me know if you have any questions or would like me to do more blog posts on this subject. I’d love to help in any way I can.
