Yes, we are only a few days into the New Year, but if you are like me… you may already be struggling with keeping some of those goals you set.
Setting New Year goals is always fun and exciting for me. It gives me a chance to look back over the past year to see what I have accomplished or what I need to add to the next years list. I try really hard not to dwell on what wasn’t accomplished and look forward to what lies ahead.
Goals can be an awesome launching pad to help up start a new exercise routine, diet, or even a new hobby. Yet, sticking to those goals can be a challenge. Unexpected trials or changes in routine can quickly get us off track, so here are my Top 5 Ways To Keep Those New Year Goals.
Define What A Goal Is To You
Goals are different for each person. Whether it’s to exercise more or maybe take a cooking class, your goals are just that.. YOUR GOALS.
Your goal may be (YOU FILL IN THIS BLANK), but is that one specific thing your actual goal or is it the result of the journey to that outcome?
What I mean is this. If our goal is to be more healthy, then being more healthy isn’t your goal. Your goals may need to be more specific like, to cut out sugars & snacks, to exercise more, or loose some weight. Being healthy then becomes the result of you accomplishing your goals.
So take some time to Define Your Goals, figure out what you need to remove or add to get there, and get going.
Write It Down and Keep Writing
I don’t know about you, but I am a visual person. If I can see or write something down I am more likely to understand or remember it.
When you put something in writing it helps give you a clear picture of where you’re going. Writing or journaling each day, week, and or month can help you track your progress. You’ll be able to see areas that you struggle in and how you reroute yourself to get back on track.
Find What You Love
What makes you happy? What gets your blood pumping? Make a list of the things you love in life and build your goals around them. If you focus on things you are passionate about, reaching your goal will be a lot easier.
Not a big fan of running? So don’t run. Maybe have a goal of walking 3 to 4 miles a day will be more enjoyable and obtainable.
Do what you love.
Yes, we’ve all heard it before, but honestly, that is where you will find your most success.
Want to try something new and different though.. then do it. Trying doesn’t mean failure. Trying in and of itself is success. Just make sure it’s something you think you will honestly like doing it. Don’t just do it because everyone else is.
Prioritize and Adjust
It’s important when setting and working on reaching new goals to spend time looking at what you do with your time. As part of your writing/journaling, analyze what you are spending the most time on and make adjustments where needed.
If one of your goals is getting up earlier in morning to exercise, but you’re struggling with squeezing that time in, take a look at what is keeping you from your goal. Do you need to go to bed a half an hour earlier or not check your phone first thing? See what is taking you away from getting where you want to be and adjust.
Set A Date & Reminders
Reminders can be anything you want them to be.
Have fun making a “Goal Board” with pictures from magazines of what your end results look like to you. Write your goals – each one- on colorful index cards and post them in different areas of your house. Any creative way you can think of that will help motivate you and remind you of where you hope to be in a few weeks or months.
Setting a date can also help you break down your goal into increments. Don’t just set a date and shoot for it. Plan it out. Break it down. This way it won’t sneak up on you and cause panic when the date is suddenly right around the corner.
You Can Do It
A lot of people avoid making goals because they fear failure. Not making your goals isn’t a horrible thing, not even trying is.
Goals can provide a person with purpose, intentions, directions, and a sense of control. They can also help you have a clearer focus for you life and help crowd out any bad influences or distractions that are keeping you from moving forward.
Take those first steps. Make a plan. TRY.
